Our Story

The Northwest Climate Gathering (NWCG) started as a plan for a single gathering, but the response was fantastic, the need to build community was palpable, so the event has become a movement. Core organizers are an intergenerational group working to connect communities in Northwestern Ontario to take positive, solution-oriented climate action.

The first Gathering was held the weekend of November 25th in Thunder Bay, Ontario to precede COP28. We had 2 packed days, with over 300 people participating in-person and online, and with 50 leaders running workshops and ensuring the Gathering’s success.

The second annual event was held at Lakehead University October 19, 2024. The event made use of a sacred fire, conversation circles, and outdoor sessions.

The third annual Gathering (Oct. 18, 2025) invited architect Lloyd Alter to talk about his books Living the 1.5 Degree Lifestyle and Upfront Carbon. Ten local organizations shared their work with participants.

The fourth Gathering will be held October 17, 2026 with a focus on active transportation initiatives in Thunder Bay and Northwest Ontario.

While gathering and energizing the environmental movement in NWO was the goal, post-COVID, the Gatherings have been the catalyst or played a supporting role in multiple subsequent initiatives:

Stone Soup Gatherings

Full Moon Bike Rides

An Artist in Residence Program

Earth Day Celebrations

The Thunder Bay Climate Transition Collective

Northwest Climate Gathering
